Skate boarding is one heck of a phenomenon, particularly for the young ones. A recent study estimated that more than 12 million people all over the planet are involved in skateboarding, and more than one-third of all skateboarders are 18 years old or younger. Skateboarding is technically characterized as an activity wherein an individual interacts with a skate board. A skateboard is a platform with wheels that was originally conceptualized in the 1950s where skateboarding became a pastime for surfers if the waves in the sea were too low. During those days, surfers disassembled roller skates and connected the wheels to planks of wood. This idea evolved from the use of what they called the crate scooters, which was in essence a transportation and a pastime piece of equipment that was created from a wooden crate that is attached to some kind of handle bars. During the 1960s, skate boarding started to turn into a craze. Producers sold millions of skateboards which basically resembled surfboards. They advertised skate boards back then as an alternative to surfing. In the 1970s, skate boarding took a dramatic turn as the materials used for the skateboards were upgraded from wood to more durable and bendable materials. Today, the skate board is a lot better than ever before, as millions of dollars are put into discovering the most effective designs and materials to be used in making them. Skate boarding is an entertaining and a challenging pastime at the same time. Some individuals use skate boards as a means of transport. It's a relatively efficient method of getting around the city because skate boards are so inexpensive and small as compared to bikes and scooters. You can purchase a skate board at a ridiculously low price, even a kid could purchase one from his pocket money. Many people see skateboarding as a serious sport which entails a lot of skill and talent. Various international competitions such as the X Games provide venues where the best skate boarders on the planet can easily demonstrate their skills. Skate boarding can be straightforward, although when it comes to executing tricks and stunts, it's a completely different world all together. One needs the right coaching and knowledge to have the confindence to pull some tricks off. If we look deeper into the arena of skate boarding, its definitely more than just a pastime or a sport, there is a culture that seemingly comes along skateboarding. Back in the olden days, skate boarding was largely affiliated with the "rebel" culture. Skateboarders were commonly given the image of being dregs and rebels. Although, as time passes by, skateboarding has been regarded as a serious activity instead of a manifestation of rebellious angst. Discovering the way to skateboard is commonly done in the streets. Many of the successful skate boarders that we have at present commenced their careers spending countless hours of practice on the streets. It was often not that they were trying to become good at skateboarding, but just that is how they loved spending their time. If you, or someone who you know is interested in skateboarding, there's really nothing wrong with giving it a try. However, there are some serious safeguards that should be taken before starting the activity. Wearing the appropriate safety equipment such as helmets, knee and elbow pads are very important when skate boarding. They might look a little bit bulky, but they will prevent you from incuring serious injuries in skateboarding. The risks from the activity are real and should not be taken for granted.
